Halibut Fleet to Parade in Seattle’s Elliott Bay as Part of Documentary Project

In what may be among the best examples of the longevity and long-term sustainability of Seattle’s commercial fishing fleet, the local halibut fleet celebrates the birthday of one of its longest serving members.

The Tordenskjold was built in Ballard 1911. She has been fishing continuously since she was launched and is currently owned by Captain Marvin Gjerde. She has travelled more than 1.2 million miles over the past century, chasing halibut, sablefish and ground fish all over the North Pacific.

On Wednesday, March 31st, the Tordenskjold will be joined by several other halibut schooners in a parade on Elliott Bay as part of a documentary of the fleet being filmed by John Sabella and Associates.

Other vessels expected to participate included the Aleutian built in 1928, Seymour 1913 (built in Tacoma), Vansee 1913 (built in Ballard), Polaris 1913 (built in Ballard), Resolute 1924 (built in Ballard), Grant 1925 (built in Ballard),  North 1924 (built in Ballard), Masonic 1929 (built in Tacoma)

Halibut can weigh upwards of 460 lbs., and vessels like the Tordenskjold can carry 98,000 pounds of halibut, typically landing 25,000-40,000 per trip. The halibut and sablefish fisheries of the North Pacific are Marine Stewardship certified for sustainability.

The combined value of halibut and sablefish landed in 2009 was in excess of $700 million retail.

There were about 135 halibut schooners built in the Northwest from the about 1900 to 1928. Today, 22 of those vessels are still fishing.

The maritime and commercial fishing industries consist of some of Seattle’s oldest, most stable and most sustainable businesses. And they are continuously profitable. According to a city of Seattle study released in 2009 (Sommers, 2009), 16,000 people earn an average of $70,750 per year in the fishing and maritime industries. Employment in the maritime industry has grown 3% since 2002, and payroll has grown 20% in the same period. Today, the maritime and fishing industries contribute $5 billion to the regional economy.

Duwamish Alive! Earth Day, April 17th

Mark your calendar for the largest Earth Day celebration in the Seattle area!

Duwamish Alive! Restore Our River
April 17th, 2010, 10am-2pm

Thousands of volunteers are needed at multiple sites in the Duwamish River watershed. Celebrate the restoration of Seattle’s Duwamish River, and the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by volunteering at one of 12 restoration sites. Work sites include a river cleanup by kayak and canoe, shoreline salmon restoration, and forest tree planting, and no experience is necessary!

You may also attend the FREE Earth Day Festival from 2-4pm at Pathfinder School in the Delridge neighborhood. The Festival will provide food, kids’ activities, informational booths, music, and special Earth Day surprises!

The restoration of the Duwamish depends on community, non-profit, government and corporate partners working together to restore the urbanized environment. The Duwamish River Estuary has less than 3% of its original habitat remaining. Our goal is to help bring back at least 30% of the river shoreline for wildlife habitat, but in order to do so, we need YOU to join us, too. We are looking for school, work, or other organizational groups as well as individuals to volunteer for Duwamish Alive.

Contact Duwamish Alive, or call 206-382-7007 today! See you on April 17!

Spring is Coming (and so are more cruises)!

by Sally on March 10, 2010

Saturday, March 13th marks the beginning of the peak cruise season at Argosy.  Our boats have been cleaned, painted and prettied up as we are gearing up for the busy spring and summer months in Seattle.  Not only is the weather supposed to get warmer (despite the snow that fell just a couple days ago…), but our tour schedule will increase once the weekend hits.

Here is the peak season cruise schedule beginning on March 13th:

Harbor Cruise
Daily: 12:15pm, 1:30pm, 2:45pm, 4:00pm

Locks Cruise
Daily: 12:30pm-3:00pm

Seattle Lakes Cruise
Monday through Friday: 1:00pm

Kirkland Lake Cruise
Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1:30pm

Tillicum Village
Saturdays and Sundays:
11:30am-3:30pm
4:30pm-8:30pm

I’m heading out to Tillicum Village on Saturday as the 2010 season has already begun.  Hopefully the weather cooperates and I’ll be able to snap some great photos to add to the blog.  Stay tuned!
